Hope for Heather

Even though it started at 6:30, on a Sunday, Yesterday was an amazing day! First off it was the 9th annual New York Colon Cancer Challenge. I was in the park by 8am and needed to find my way to the Naumburg Bandshell. If you've been following for a while you'll know that I adore Central Park but I seem to never be able to find the places I'm looking for. Today, victory was mine!

I finally found The Mall
While trying to find the bandshell I stumbled upon The Mall. My dumb ass has been trying to find this spot for about 3 years. You'd think it wouldn't be that difficult. I mean, it's kind of in the center of the park. How hard can it be? Apparently it's difficult for this girl. Like all good things, I found it completely by accident.

This picture kind of sucks since I forgot my actual camera and was mid-step when I took it. The Mall is lined with American Elm trees which create a canopy over the area. You can just imagine how gorgeous this scene is anytime of the year. This picture kind of sucks because I forgot my camera and was mid-step when I took it. I will absolutely be going back when it gets warmer. Possibly sooner. I forgot how much I love the park. Especially on a Sunday.

Ironically enough, at the end of The Mall was the registration area. I checked in, got my number and t-shirt and met my team, Hope for Heather. It was great to see so many runners and walkers joining together to show support against colon cancer. Some facts:
  • Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in the U.S.
  • 90% of new cases and 95% of deaths from colon cancer occur in people 50 or older. However, colon cancer does not discriminate and can happen to men and women at any age.
  • While rates for colon cancer in adults 50 and older have been declining, incidence rates in adults younger than 50 years has been increasing. (Hope for Heather walks in honor of Heather Weeks who was diagnosed with an aggressive form of colon cancer on June 10, 2008.She passed away on November 14, 2008 at age 24.)

On our way out of the park I saw this sign and almost lost it.

Which led me here....

Do you know how long I've been looking for this?!

  1. Aw good for you guys! A great cause.

  2. Love the picture of the Mall - even if you think it sucks! Gives me an idea of what you are talking about - because when you first mentioned it I thought it was a mall (as in collection of shops) and I was wondering why there was one in the middle of Central Park ;-)

    Thanks for sharing this event.

  3. Love that sign and the spot it led you to!!! How wonderful. And good for you for doing this :)

  4. Yay Strawberry Fields!  Thank you for sharing this post.  That's so amazing of you to do this for such a worthy cause.
