The Return of Pop Up

I was walking to my office this morning and I glanced up at one of the screens and the most glorious piece of information caught my eye....

I don't know about you but I loved this show. I've always been infatuated with random trivia about things and pop up video was my favorite form of that. I was so pissed when it went off the air.

The only thing I'm wary about is the videos themselves. Let's be real, today's music is shit. I mean honestly, how many times are we going to hear "songs" going on about bitchez and hoez, the whips they drive and how their wallets are so fat they're going to make it rain? Not that Robert Palmer was particularly mind blowing with this black and white video and androgynous women in mini dresses playing guitar.

My point is, today's music has no staying power. It's all crap. Can you honestly tell me one song that came out in 2008 that are still played today? How about 1999? Let me save you the trouble - you can't. However, I can name you songs that came out from the 80s to the 50s that are still played today because they're classics. Today we have no classics. Do you really think Lady Gaga is going to be as famous as she is in another 5-10 years? She's no Cher I can tell you that. Or One Direction? Seriously? Don't these boy band plants realize that no boy band ever stays together for longer than 5 years max? Give it up already! And hip-hop and rap? Ugh. I miss Bone Thugs n Harmony and Nine and A Tribe Called Quest. REAL rappers who rapped about REAL issues.

Now that I've explained why I'm worried about the longevity of the show's return, let's go back to being excited that it's even coming back.

Since I'll be at work you can bet that I will be programming my DVR to record this little treasure. I'm going to try to watch with an open mind. I'm going to try to remember that it's 2012 and not 1993 and that the times they are a changin'.

It's not going to be my original Pop-Up Video. I will try not to judge... too much.

  1. Pop up video ROCKS! Even to bad music.

  2. I actually have never heard of Pop Up Video. I'm sorry but I haven't. I do agree with you though that a lot of music isn't going to be remembered, or considered a classic, or potentially even anything great. I can name songs that came out some time ago that are still big for me today though :) If, in 400 years time, Justin Bieber or One Direction are counted as "classical music" then I will just die. Because I don't plan on dying before then.

  3. Pop up video? I'll have to check it out for sure.

  4. OMG IT'S COMING BACK?! I LOVE Pop Up Video. Er, loved. Like you, I'm not quite sure what to think of the reincarnation with today's music...but I'll give it a shot because seriously, it's POP UP VIDEO.

  5. Good news! It's VH1 Classics. So it's basically reruns!
