Kid Lessons

Usually I get to be the fun Aunt who spoils and then hands her back to my parents when it's time for me to go home. If you happened to have noticed my social media and blog commenting absence this week it's due to the fact that I've spent the week babysitting Little Miss while my parents are on vacation. In Jamaica. While I'm at their house. With a baby. I know. Another post, another day.

I've been around young kids my whole life. My sister and I were 11 years apart. My brother and I are 13 years apart. I've done the diapers, and the feedings, peek-a-boo, etc. It was a huge life lesson telling me to never have kids. I kid... kind of. What it did teach me was that kids aren't hard to deal with, but it's nice to give them back to someone else.

Take, for instance, this face:

She can do no wrong. I'm so wrapped around her little finger I don't think I'll ever be able to see straight again. Funny how they do that.

Given that I've been immersed in the World of Baby for the past week, here's a few things I've observed

If it's on the floor, it's good to eat

I observe the 5 second rule just like everyone else, sometimes the 10 second rule if I have to. But when it comes to babies, it doesn't matter what it is. If it's on the floor, it's fair game. Because really, who wouldn't want to eat grass, lint and yesterday's breakfast?

Not Little Miss but I have observed this... move

Sleep is Overrated
Sleep is elusive if there's a baby in the house. Sure she's good about sleeping through the night, the problem is on my end. I sleep like a rock. Now that there's now a baby monitor next to me I'm basically not sleeping. This whole sleeping but not really sleeping thing is exhausting.

Big Kid Complex
Little Miss may only be 15 months (in 2 days) but she thinks she's older than she is. If I'm eating a bagel, she wants some. I'm drinking coffee, she needs to have a few all the sips. I'm in my room, let's slam the door. Over and over and over. My favorite thing is when she actually tries to drink from her sippy cups on her own. She doesn't tilt it back enough to actually get the juice... and then she gets pissed.

New Cartoons
I basically spent my early teen years watching Nick Jr. Tragic, I know. But if you want to talk about Blue's Clues, Bob the Builder, Little Bear then I'm your girl. Fortunately, Little Miss has good taste. She loves the Spongebob theme song and tries to sing along. Her favorite show is Team Umizoomi, which I have to say, I'm kind of hooked on right now.

Judge away...

I'm pretty sure by the time I return home it may take a bit to lose the kid talk. Although, yesterday, I did speak to my first adult in 2 days! There's hope for me yet.

  1. Being near kids has really taught me to never have kids. Even when there's someone you can hand them back to I try to avoid them. But they really are quite a learning experience in good ways too.

  2. My brother and I are 10 years apart, so I TOTALLY relate to your TV past! CAN WE FIX IT? And salt and pepper and paprika and cinnamon and HERE'S THE MAIL IT NEVER FAILS IT MAKES ME WANT TO WAG MY TAIL....did you watch the Teletubbies? God, I hope you missed that train. That crap was like a bad acid trip, only I was too young to be not sober enough to enjoy it. Even now my brother and I still watch Phineas & Ferb together. Greatest. Cartoon. Ever.
